In 1981, Liberty Avenue was a different place of culture, it served as Pittsburgh’s red-light district. The buildings we see today, housing art galleries, theaters, restaurants, shops, etc, were home to adult novelty stores, strip clubs, xxx theaters, gay bars and burlesque houses. Fifty years before that, the red-light district was the original culture center of Pittsburgh, home to retail stores, art cinemas and shops. The Cultural District has undergone many changes since 1981, some of the past has been erased, and some of it has been restored.
